Pema worked for me for 4 years. She took care of my 5 year old twins from the time they were 1 and lived in Monday thru Friday. She is loving and exceptionally patient. She also does light housekeeping, laundry and children’s cooking she got along well with other nannys and arranged play dates. She was completely reliable. The NY Times Magazine cover article this past weekend was called, “The Other Mothers of Manhattan.” In my opinion, the photos were romanticized and at the same time, bleak, and the essay was trite and superficial. Well, you want to know what I really think, right?
Yet again we read a piece from the points of view of the mothers and thenannies. What always seems to be missing in these articles is the point of view of the children, arguably the most important actors in this story. The grown–up children, I mean–people who were raised with nannies, who by now have some perspective on the experience. Wouldn’t it be interesting and important to hear from them?

Pam has it all but what makes her so special is her loving way with our 3 year old daughter. Pam treats our daughter like she is her own child and she always puts our daughter first!Pam is recognized by other parents, teachers, her peers and children as being a terrific individual – we are constantly told how incredible she is not only with our daughter but our daughters’ friends as well. She makes every one of the children she is in contact with feel loved, taken care of and most importantly safe and secure.Pam is both terrific at completing tasks that are asked of her as well as taking initiative in planning outings for our daughter: from going to the museum or library, having picnics in Central Park, completing arts and crafts projects, to reading books, doing puzzles, baking, and visiting the many different playgrounds around the neighborhood. She has kept our daughter busy with all that NYC has to offer. She has made it easy for us to trust her instincts and to take charge of extra curricular for our daughter.Not only does she excel at the playtime activities, she is a vital part of our daughter’s education. From helping our daughter learn the five senses to the name of the President, Pam is able to keep our daughter interested in the world around her and makes learning fun.
Lastly, Pam is very reliable. She has never called in sick and she is always on time. She always makes sure that the house is in order when she leaves for the day, including cleaning up the my daughters room, cleaning up the kitchen and having my daughter bathed and fed by the time she leaves.Our family considers Pam a true partner in raising our daughter and we want her to find another family she can help make a difference for. She 100% respects the parents’ wishes (ie schedules, diet, etc) but she takes ownership in her job and offers the most valuable advice.
I’ve seen this lovely family and their sweet children around town for years. They are doing a lot right and I’m sure their nanny is superb!

* She is from St Lucia. She is married, in her late 30’s with a 13
year old daughter and lives in Brooklyn. We have had her as our live-out
nanny since May 2007 right before our second child was born in June. She
has *maybe* had all of a grand total of 5 sick days in all of that
time. Im not going to lie- we are spoiled by that!
* Her English is excellent and crisp. She gets down on the floor
and plays with a child as if she is a child as well. Kids love her. She
is active, fun, creative and patient. She is loving and genuine and a
true “mensch”. She respects all religions and doesn’t impose personal
opinions on any one.
* Her nanny job prior to working with us with a family on long
island. She had excellent references from them as well
* She is not yet a US citizen but is in the process of applying
for a green card as she just got married to her long time boyfriend.
* She is great with babies as well as children of all ages. We
have firsthand experience with her in both scenarios.
* In an ideal world- she stays with us part time and we find a
well suited nanny share situation for moving forward. This is the #1
route we are looking to explore. Our kids are in school all day from
8-3:45. On Mondays and Thursdays – we would not need her to start at our
place until 4:30 latest. ON Tuesdays and Wednesdays we need her from
3:45 and on. On Fridays she is completely free as we don’t need her
Fridays at all & she is totally available.
* One way of looking at it- is : She is available Monday, Tuesday,
Wednesday and Thursday from 9-3:30 and Fridays all day. Or you can get
more specific with slightly different end times- M/Thurs- 4pm and T/W-
330pm.
* We are also away on most holidays outside of the city and we
don’t take her with us so you would have the ability to have her on most
holidays as well as long holiday weekends. I know that could be a big
plus in a nanny share scenario as usually both families want the holiday
weekend options. We don’t need it 90% of the time!
* Additionally- We are looking to make this a permanent schedule
vs a constantly shifting one. We feel that its best for all to have a
measure of consistency for the basic schedule while being flexible for
the moving part occasions.
* We could start this as soon as July and as late as September
with the right pairing of family.

While Dolly has most recently worked on the Upper East Side, she worked in Brooklyn Heights for 6 years and prior to that, worked on both the Upper West and Upper East Side.Dolly has worked with us since our older son, now 2.5 years old, was one month old and since April has also cared for younger son, now age 10 months. Her responsibilities included childcare and light housekeeping, and she exceeded expectations on both. On a daily basis, Dolly prepared meals and fed both kids, arranged playdates, took the kids to the playground or for walks, story time, played in the apartment, and bathed both children. She also nap-trained both, helped both learn to crawl, and with my older son (as my younger is still too young), Dolly taught him songs, hundreds of words (he knows the difference between a macaw and a toucan!), how to complete small puzzles, and many other developmental skills. While Dolly has a great deal of childcare experience, Dolly respects and follows the childcare goals and values that we set out and will also offer us advice when appropriate. For us, it was always important that our children get social exposure to other children and Dolly has been very outgoing and sought out playdates with many other nannies – one of my favorite things was to come home to a room full of children playing and singing. Dolly is also incredibly responsible and trustworthy. In the 2.5 years that she has worked with us, Dolly has never been more than 5-10 minutes late on 1-2 occasions.What I also continue to be amazed about is how Dolly can care for my two children for 10.5 hours per day and make it seem so easy. She enjoyed making meals for my daughter and encouraging her to try new things. You never have to remind Yvonette to do something more than once and she always went above and beyond what was expected. I came home each night to a happy, well rested baby and a tidy home.

When Fazie first came to work for me, I had a 15 month old son, Max and was pregnant with my second. Whenever I try to describe the kind of babysitter Fazie is I think back to when I first interviewed her. I had a two-step approach when meeting with candidates. First I would meet the person and if that went well I would check their references and then invite them back to do a trial playdate at the park with me and my son. (I highly recommend this! You can tell a lot about a babysitter by the way they play with and try to engage your kids) I must have interviewed at least 20 people at that point with 5 of those making it to park playdates and my painfully shy toddler had no interest in any of them. Max, Fazie and I made it to the park and Max never even looked back at me as he ran off with Fazie. For those who know my son well, you understand what an amazing thing this was. Fazie just has that kind of gentle, loving vibe that kids immediately pick up on.
Now that my boys are 3 and 21 months, they are pretty much like little tornados. Fazie has never lost her patience with either of them, a trick I have yet to master. When they are misbehaving or doing something they shouldn’t, she has taught them with a shake of her finger “that’s a no-no.” When Max & Gabe fight as all siblings do and one is inconsolable, she is able to resolve the conflict and soothe the angry. She will rock an overtired toddler to sleep for over an hour if need be, build Lego towers for days, give piggy back rides long after I would refuse and magically heal boo-boos with kisses. She consistently goes above and beyond what many others would not do. Under her care my kids eat broccoli, bell peppers and fish, among other things she was able to successfully introduce. When I was in the hospital for 4 days after my second C-section, Fazie stayed over at my apartment for all four of those days and nights so my husband could be with me at the hospital. She has also stayed over on various other occasions when we’ve asked and has never said no to coming in early or staying late . We rely on her a lot as we don’t have any relatives in the area to help us out. She is married and has two daughters of her own-8 and 16. The 8 year old is the love of my boys’ lives. You have never seen puppy love like when Fazie brings her daughter to our house. My husband & I hope for school holidays so she can come visit because everyone has such a good time. We live on the Upper East Side and Fazie has made many other nanny friends for my kids to go on playdates with. I’ve made some great friends through our nannies introducing us to each other which has been a terrific bonus.
Fazie is also sensitive to religious customs and dietary needs. At one point we had my younger son on an extremely restricted diet to test him for food allergies and she was invaluable in helping us adhere to it. She sings Shabbat songs with my sons when we light the Friday night candles and even read one of Max’s books about the holiday of Shavuot which means she knows more than I do about that holiday.
The hardest thing about leaving New York is really going to be losing our adopted family member Fazie. I don’t know how we’ll ever be able to find someone in FL that can measure up to her. To say it’s important to us that she ends up with a good family is an understatement. She currently works for us full time 40 hours a week and we are hoping to help her find a similar situation. Stefanie has been with our family for 1 year, and our children are now going to school full time in September. We have 3.5 year-old boy/girl twins, and she is an ALL-STAR at taking care of them.
Stefanie takes them to all the parks on the UWS. She takes weekly trips with the kids to the Children’s Museum of Manhattan, Museum of Natural History, and the Central Park Zoo. She is motivated and a self-starter. She has tons of energy with the kids and she doesn’t need constant direction. She always has the kids working on creative projects (i.e. scavenger hunts, making Christmas ornaments out of baked play doh, sticker boards for good behavior, and much more). She even made them their own scrapbooks for Christmas, and filled them with photos that she had taken of the twins.
Stefanie never complains, and she is able to roll with any changes in the schedule. I work from home so we are around each other a lot! She keeps our home clean, and she handles the twin’s laundry, ironing, dishes, and any meals that fall into her hours. Stefanie is also great at communicating. She is always available by cell phone, and she texts or calls me throughout the day with updates. She is extremely smart and articulate, and she can speak to the twin’s teachers in my absence, and relay any important information back to me. I also email her over the weekends to let her know of any schedule changes. She is very tech-savvy!
We hired Stefanie last year because she had a glowing recommendation from the family she worked with before us. I am so sad to let Stefanie go, but she will make a new family very happy. Please feel free to email or call me for more info.

Our amazing nanny will be available soon. We are moving and despite profuse begging on our part, she cannot move with us. Donique is incredible in all aspects:
– She is wonderful and caring with our two boys. Our 3 yr old refused to be left with any nannies or sitters until we found Donique. They are always doing artwork, reading, playing dress up or out at the park or library. Donique is equally as great with our 16 month old – keeps him on a schedule, ensures he is safe and teaches him many new things. She is calm and firm and disciplines when necessary. She cooks them healthy, well-rounded meals (vegetables included).
– Donique is prompt and reliable and never sick despite us being sick all the time. She drops off and picks up our 3 yr old at school on time and the boys are always ready and punctual for their various activities.
– She is a very hard worker and has endless energy which is a definite necessity for 2 boys.
– She is very clean – keeps the children’s bedrooms and kitchen spotless and does tons of their laundry every week.
– Donique is always taking initiative – setting up playdates, finding out about story times at the library, setting up a rewards calendar for good behavior etc.

I’m 29 years old. My fiance and I were recently transferred here from North Carolina. We’ve just moved to the Upper West Side. I am currently unemployed, and am planning to take the NY Bar Exam in next week. I do not start my full time position until September 2012 (when I will begin working as a governmental attorney).
I’ve always loved children and have spent lots of time with them. I’ve formed lasting relationships with several families who I have worked for over the years, and I am hoping to continue to do so here in New York this spring and summer (and after September on occasional evenings if I develop a close relationship with a wonderful family). I have experience as a camp counselor at a camp for children with special needs, as a middle school math tutor, as a college spanish tutor, as a nanny for four years, a babysitter for multiple families for over ten years, and as a godmother to the adorable 17 month old son of my best friend. I believe in spending time out at the park, at children’s museums, at the library, cooking and baking, making arts and crafts, playing make-believe and dress up, and generally getting really into whatever it is that your kids really love to do. I always spent a lot of time playing outside with the kids I’ve babysat for in the past–jumping on the trampoline, swimming, biking, playing tag, or decorating with sidewalk chalk. I’m new to New York so I don’t know all the hidden kid-friendly treasures that this city has to offer yet but I’m resourceful and will find them oso that your kids will have lots of fun spring and summer adventures.
I’m happy to fix meals and generally try to leave things as clean or cleaner than I found them. If your kids are napping, I’m happy to fold laundry or do other odd household tasks to help out. I’m also happy to help out with homework or to meet your kids and walk them to/from school/lessons. I love animals (especially dogs) and, if it is possible to bring your pup along with us when we head out to the playground and you’d like him to get the extra exercise, I’m thrilled to have him along too.

HI! Our wonderful nanny has been with us for 5 years and is adored by our kids as well as the parents of all of their friends, but as our kids are getting older, we have only needed her part time for the last year. Because we love her so much we kept her with PT hours but paid FT for the last year.

As a professor from the University of Iowa, I (Jeff) had the opportunity to spend 5 months in Italy on a research sabbatical. My wife (Amie) and 3 year old daughter (Willa) accompained me. To allow my wife to complete online course work for a graduate degree, we needed a babysitter for Willa. Upon arriving in Italy, we found several local candidates four aur babysitting job and without question, Stefania was the best interview and we feel unbelievably lucky to have found her.
Stefania is caring, well-mannered young woman who does an amazing job with Willa. Stefania eased Willa’s transition from the U.S. to Italy with silly playtime; Willa giggles non-stop when playing with Stefania. Willa loves her more than words can say and regularly asks when she can have a “Stefania Day”. It was cold and rainy during our first couple months in Italy, so Willa and Stefania had to stay insde, but Stefania never ran out of creative ideas to play with Willa. Stefania is also tremendously generous. For Willa’s birthday, she voluntereed to make a gorgeous Snow White cake and came to her birthday party – all the while refusing to be paid for her time or the cake.
Not only is Stefania great with children, my wife and I have enjoyed having her around. From a parent’s perspective, she is very personable and easy to work with. Stefania offered to drive us to places in the area wich we cannot reach via public transportation (we don’t have a car here in Italy). We trust her as if she was a family member. When Amie and I took an overnight trip to celebrate her birthady, Stefania took the responsability to take care for Willa for over 24 consecutive hours!
We also appreciate how Stefania is respectful and does not try to assume the role of parent, but rather she carefully communicates with us on our parenting philosophy and abides by our wishes. Stefania is kind and patient with Willa’s 3 year old antics. Even when Willa is being defiant, Stefania always gets down on her level, talks to her in a calm voice, and convinces Willa to act in a more appropriate way. We believe that Stefania is meant to work with children and her aspirations of becoming a pediatrician are a testament to that.
We will miss her very much when we live Italy. We don’t need child care when we return to the U.S., but if we did we would bring her back with us! Stefania has been a true blessing during our stay in Italy and have no doubt that she would be a wonderful complement to your family.

We first met Cecil in 2010, when my sister and I were looking for a nanny to take care of our children (ages 12 months and 4 months). From day one Cecil has been professional and respectful, punctual and reliable. I can think of only one day that Cecil called out sick in three years and she was sick because she caught something from my child! The strong bond they have with Cecil is palpable. The joy they have from time spent with Cecil lights up the room.
Cecil is energetic and artistic, gentle and loving, but also firm and consistent. She juggled two newborns and then two young girls seemingly effortlessly. Cecil has initiative and loves to be out and about. At the same time, she respects our wishes regarding naptime and the like. She likes to travel and is ready and willing to go on walks to parks, museums, the library and the playground. She is sociable and makes friends easily with other nannies. I have heard so many unsolicited complements about her over the years I have lost track. Neighbors, mothers, teachers, and strangers – all tell me how lucky we are. From one stay-at-home neighbor (who meets a lot of nannies), I have heard amazement at how “in-tune” she is with the needs and personalities of my children. From another neighbor (a stranger until this conversation), I have heard how respectful and polite she is toward the children and others. From everyone I hear how happy the children are every time they are with her. I frequently get to see her in action and I too am constantly amazed at the warmth and patience she exhibits. Our amazing babysitter of 8 years is going to be available starting this fall for full time work. Many of you know Mencie from around the neighborhood. She came to work for our family when Justin was 4 years old. Since then we had 2 more sons, now aged 7 and 4 and with everyone in school all day long, Mencie is longing to be around children again. Mencie is an extremely loving, caring person, who is also able to sternly discipline my sons when needed. My nanny spent the past 2.5 years as the nanny for my boy/girl twins since they were 6 months old and has over 17 years of childcare experience working with twins and single’s. Our wonderful nanny of 3 years is looking for a new job. She cared for our two daughters (the oldest from 5mo-3years, and the little one from birth-1 year). Marlene is a very caring, calm and helpful person. She took on a wide variety of jobs for us: she made baby food from scratch for both girls, warmed breast-milk and formula, helped with sleep training, potty training and the transition to nursery school. She arranged play dates independently for my older daughter from the children and caregivers she met in the neighborhood. I credit her completely with our daughter having friends at all! We lived on the upper west side when Marlene worked for us and she is comfortable in the neighborhood, but is happy to work anywhere in Manhattan. The only reason that she is not currently working for us is because we moved to Brooklyn and the commute was too long for her (1.5 hrs). She was never sick and always arrived to work on time, if not 5 mins early. She is an excellent communicator and really easy to be around. She is also willing to do light house-keeping, cooking and laundry for the little ones etc. I remember how helpful she was in organizing my children’s drawers or helping me pack for trips. But what really comes to mind is the time my daughter was very sick with a fever and Marlene held her and rocked her for 8 hours straight while I was at work. If you want a caretaker who is filled with love for your children and genuinely wants to help, this is your nanny. For the last 2 years, since Marlene has been working elsewhere, she still visits my children over Christmas and summer vacation. They love her and have such a bond with her!

When I first met Eugenie, I was immediately taken by her kind smile and nice way with my then 1 month old baby, Viviane. When she joined us full-time when Viviane turned 3 months, I could not have wished for a better person to care for her. Eugenie has been with us for 2 years now and she is very gentle and caring and has showered both of my kids with love. She has created a true bond with them: they love being around her and are truly comfortable in her presence. Not once has Viviane cried when I left for work!
I had a tough few months with my eldest, Noah, when I had Viviane. He was trying to get my attention by being fresh which led to a lot of scolding. When Eugenie was with him, she was wonderful at being there for him, listening to him; she was kind yet firm. I think it really helped him calm down and ultimately accept his sister. Eugenie also helped him toilet train and he hasn’t had an accident since. He has told her numerous times that he loves her (unsolicited – as does his sister) and has told me that she is a lot of fun to play with. They sometimes draw together too and it’s fun to come home to some beautiful artwork! Eugenie shows true appreciation for what he does: artwork, good behavior etc and he responds well to that. Eugenie picks him up from school and takes care of both kids (park, bath, dinner) until my husband or I come home.
One of the reasons I was thrilled to work with Eugenie is because she is fluent in French and I wanted my kids to learn the language. Both understand it completely and both speak a little. Eugenie is also fluent in English and in Spanish!
I completely trust Eugenie and that my kids are safe with her. At my request, she calls me anytime something significant happens and also seeks my advice on a number of things. She has taken both kids to the doctor when they didn’t feel great and has handled these visits in the way I asked, where I could speak with the doctor and she would give me details when I got home.
Eugenie has a nice way of letting my husband and me be the parents and being there to support us while taking our directions and cues for how we would like her to take care of the kids. For instance, when I said I didn’t want them to eat a particular snack and preferred fresh fruit instead, Eugenie has since made sure we would always have fresh fruit at home and I would often find it precut in the fridge. I shared I wasn’t keen on pre made baby food so every day Eugenie would make Viviane food from scratch and adapted to her age (eg puréed when she started eating solids and now regular food).
Eugenie feeds the children, does their laundry, she plays with them, talks to them, takes my little one to dance and music classes, and takes her along to pickup her brother from school. Eugenie has also been great at organizing play dates for Viviane and sends me pictures every day of Viviane doing her thing: eating, in the park, with her friends etc.
Viviane is growing up and she will be going to school in September. My heart swells when I think of all of the positive things that Eugenie has done for our family – I could not recommend her more highly. I am very happy to talk about her to any family considering working with her and help her however I can.

Hi there!
My family is moving from Austin to Manhattan this summer and we’re looking for 20-25 flexible day-time hrs per week of care for our baby starting sometime in August (she will be 5 months at that point). We’d like to partner with a family who already has a nanny and would be open to adding our baby into the mix part time OR a family who is looking to partner up for day-time care. The intention of the arrangement is to subsidize the cost of a nanny for the families involved and increase the hourly compensation for a wonderful nanny who can care for more than one child at a time (I’d say that’s a win-win!)

Hello Families, I am new to NY and we have had a short stay, only here for a year. When first moving here I had to look for a caretaker for my son, for the first time ever outside of family. A friend at work recommended our sitter Candy. We met and every since she has been the most dependable support I could have ever asked for. The most devasting part about leaving, other then my 4 year olds friendships he has made, will be to leave Candy. Candy works from about 18 hours to 30 hours and always there if my son is sick for the day. She picks him up from school has regualar play dates for every day of the week. Candy is so amazing with my son, who has a lot of energy, she keeps him busy and on our schedule as well.
If you are in search of a sitter/ nanny I would recommend her to take care of any one of my freinds or families children, she has always kept my son safe and he loves her.

Our former nanny, Savitri, is seeking full-time work (10 hrs/day, five days/week). She has 20 years experience caring for newborns, toddlers and preschool age children on the Upper West Side, Columbia University and midtown neighborhoods. When our children were newborns and until we moved overseas for my husband’s sabbatical, Savitri cared for our son and daughter. She did everything from diapering, feeding, preschool pick-up, trips to parks and activities, and play dates.
