In my quest to explore NYC with the girls between school ending and camp beginning, I made a wish list of places to explore*. Today, I wanted to invite you to visit the Streit’s matzah factory with us on the Lower East Side. The Rabbi there will give us a tour of the factory! If you want to join us, we can meet there at 3:00, take the F train to Delancy. Or let me know you want to go and we can travel together…
If you ever want to go on your own, just call them. I went years ago, before kids, and it’s so memorable! What a gem to have a place like this in NYC, not in some factory in NJ…
* Did you know that peacocks live on the ground of St. John the Divine on 112th & Amsterdam?
UPDATE: The taste of fresh off the line matzah, warm and crisp was worth the schlep to the Lower East Side. We loved seeing the dough poured, rolled and cut before it went through the long oven, then separated at the end. It was HOT in that old factory but very memorable and worth it. The people at Streit’s Matzah factory are happy to give tours to anyone who calls (individuals or classes/groups)
There is an old-fashioned candy store nearby called Economy Candy, the nice Streit’s market guy told us about. After spending only $1 per item in their factory store (I must keep this in mind before Passover) and the candy, we were all happy! |
